Il 6 e 7 novembre 2025 si è tenuto a Parigi il primo meeting annuale del European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (EUnetCCC), iniziativa co-finanziata dalla Commissione Europea che riunisce 160 partner provenienti da 31 Paesi europei. Per l’Istituto hanno partecipato Giulia Piaggio, Discovery and Translational Research e Maurizio Fanciulli, Responsabile dell’unità di ricerca SAFU IRE.
Nel corso dell’evento è stato presentato il Libro Bianco di EUnetCCC, Unleashing the Potential of the Future European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres. Il documento delinea una roadmap per la creazione, entro il 2028, di un’infrastruttura europea stabile, sostenuta da un quadro di governance duraturo, finanziamenti strutturali dedicati e una piena integrazione tra ricerca, formazione e assistenza. L’obiettivo ambizioso è garantire, entro il 2030, a nove pazienti oncologici su dieci l’accesso a centri di eccellenza altamente specializzati.
I dati discussi durante il meeting evidenziano la rilevanza dell’iniziativa: nell’Unione Europea i tassi di mortalità oncologica variano da 331 decessi ogni 100.000 abitanti in Polonia a 209 a Malta. L’Italia registra un tasso di 236 decessi ogni 100.000 abitanti, inferiore del 3,1% rispetto alla media europea, pari a circa 6.800 morti in meno.
La partecipazione dell’IFO-IRE all’EUnetCCC Annual Meeting 2025 conferma l’impegno dell’Istituto nel contribuire alla costruzione di una rete oncologica europea più forte, equa e innovativa. Come sottolineato durante l’incontro, “un progetto europeo di questa portata può nascere solo se fondato su collaborazione, trasparenza e fiducia reciproca”.
IFO-IRE at the EUnetCCC Annual Meeting 2025 in Paris
IFO-IRE participated in the EUnetCCC Annual Meeting 2025, held in Paris on 6–7 November. Representing the Institute were Dr. Giulia Piaggio and Dr. Maurizio Fanciulli. The initiative, funded by the European Commission, is part of the Joint Action EUnetCCC European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres, a network bringing together 160 partners from 31 European countries, in which the Institute plays an active and strategic role.
During the event, the EUnetCCC White Paper, Unleashing the Potential of the Future European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres, was presented. The document outlines a roadmap for establishing a stable European infrastructure by 2028, supported by a long-term governance framework, dedicated structural funding, and full integration among research, training, and patient care. The ambitious goal is to ensure that by 2030 nine out of ten cancer patients have access to highly specialised centres of excellence.
The data discussed at the meeting highlight the importance of the initiative: cancer mortality rates in the European Union range from 331 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in Poland to 209 in Malta. Italy records a rate of 236 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, 3.1% lower than the European average, corresponding to about 6,800 fewer deaths.
IFO-IRE’s participation in the EUnetCCC Annual Meeting 2025 reaffirms the Institute’s commitment to contributing to the development of a stronger, more equitable, and more innovative
European cancer network. As emphasised during the meeting, “a European project of this scale can only be built on collaboration, transparency, and mutual trust.”
